Where the Coast gets Quieter

This guided cycling tour blends manageable riding with Maine’s most dramatic coastline — quiet roads, iconic parks, and time to soak it all in.

Solitude & Sunrises is a guided Maine cycling tour along the quiet, remote coast of Downeast Maine, where early light, empty roads, and wide Atlantic views set the rhythm of each day. Designed for travelers who value space and unhurried riding, this bike tour explores fishing villages, island crossings, and wild shoreline far from Maine’s busiest roadways.

The journey culminates in Acadia National Park, with early-morning rides on iconic roads before the crowds arrive — a rare chance to experience one of Maine’s most celebrated landscapes in near solitude.

Downeast Tour Itinerary

DAY 1 Arrival at the Edge of Maine

The journey begins as we leave Bangor behind and travel downeast to the quiet fishing village of Lubec, where the road quite literally runs out and the Atlantic Ocean opens wide.

After lunch overlooking the water, we head out for a short, easy ride along Passamaquoddy Bay. This first spin is meant to wake up your legs and ease you into the rhythm of the week. Salt air, working boats, and wide views set the tone for what’s ahead.

By evening, the pace has already shifted. You’re no longer rushing — you’ve settled into the relaxed pace of a coastal Maine vacation.

  •  10 miles | elevation gain 431 ft
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  •  first of 3 nights: The Inn on the Wharf

DAY 2 Whales, Borders, and Open Horizons

Today begins on the water with a whale-watching cruise on the Bay of Fundy, one of the most biologically rich marine environments on the East Coast. Watching whales surface here is humbling — and unforgettable.

In the afternoon, we cross into Canada and arrive on Campobello Island. After lunch and a visit to the historic Roosevelt home, we cycle quiet island roads that feel far removed from modern urgency. The terrain rolls gently, the scenery stretches wide, and the day unfolds without hurry.

It’s a day that feels expansive — in every sense of the word.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  •  second of 3 nights: The Inn on the Wharf

DAY 3 Tides, Ferries, and the Far East

Maine’s tides take center stage this morning at the Pembroke Reversing Falls, where — if timing allows — the tidal flow quite literally changes direction before your eyes.

From here, we ride toward Eastport, the easternmost city in the United States. Equal parts gritty and creative, Eastport is home to artists, working docks, and shops that feel refreshingly unpolished. You’ll have time to explore before boarding the ferry back to Lubec — a peaceful finish that gives your legs a break and your mind time to wander.

  •  30 miles | elevation gain 1,476 ft
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  •  Third of 3 nights: The Inn on the Wharf

DAY 4 Where the Atlantic shows its Strength

Today brings us to the wild edge of the Schoodic Peninsula, where the Atlantic crashes against granite cliffs and the coastline feels raw and untamed.

We explore the village of Winter Harbor, ride through the summer cottages of Grindstone Neck, and continue toward the fishing village of Corea. A quiet walk on a hidden beach offers a moment of stillness before the day’s reward: fresh Maine lobster enjoyed without rush.

  •  30 miles | elevation gain 1,559 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
  •  First of 2 nights at The Pathmaker Hotel

DAY 5 Car-free Riding in Acadia

Few cycling experiences match the grace of Acadia National Park’s Carriage Roads. Designed by John D. Rockefeller Jr., these wide, car-free gravel roads wind through pine forests, across stone bridges, and reveal panoramic views of Mount Desert Island’s interior.

The grades are forgiving, the surface smooth, and the pace intentionally relaxed. This is a day to settle fully into the ride — steady pedaling, quiet conversation, and scenery that rewards patience.

  •  26 miles | elevation gain 1,706 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch & Dinner
  •  First of 2 nights at The Pathmaker Hotel

DAY 6 Acadia in the Morning

We rise early for a reason.

An early-morning ride on the Park Loop Road allows us to experience Acadia before the crowds arrive. The light is soft, the roads are quiet, and the views feel personal — a fitting finale to the week.

By midday, we shuttle back to Bangor, carrying home more than photos: a slower rhythm, clearer head, and lifelong memories.

  •  21 or 27 miles | elevation gain 2,610 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast
