Discover Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is the only national park created by private land donations. At 49,075 acres, it is one of the country’s smallest national parks. It is spread among several islands: Mt. Desert, Isle au Haut, the Cranberry Islands, and the Schoodic Penisula.

Acadia offers excellent cycling, hiking, and kayaking.  Having been fortunate to guide in Acadia for over twenty years, we have in-depth knowledge of the Park. Savor the sound of surf crashing against the rocky shores of Maine and indulge in the delights of wild Maine blueberries and freshly caught lobster.

Acadia Multi-Sport Tour

Day 1 Hiking Acadia Mountain

This trip begins in Portland, Maine. We meet our traveling companions in the morning and transfer to Bar Harbor. After introductions and a picnic lunch, we will do our initial exploration of Acadia National Park on foot. We hike the Acadia Mountain Trail through the forest and along beautiful granite formations to reach the summit of Acadia Mountain. Here we enjoy spectacular views of the ocean, surrounding islands and neighboring mountains. We wrap up our day with dinner in lively Bar Harbor.

  • Today’s Activity: hike 2.5 miles | elevation gain 500 ft
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  • Lodging: The Harborside Hotel

Day 2 Cycling Schoodic Peninsula

The Schoodic Peninsula is the only part of Acadia National Park located on the mainland, separated from Mount Desert Island by Frenchman Bay. Our day begins with a one-hour ferry ride from Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor. Enjoy views of Egg Rock Light and watch for seals along the way. After the ferry, we pedal to Schoodic Head for great views of the pounding waves and Cadillac Mountain. From here, we continue cycling to the tiny fishing village of Corea for lunch overlooking the harbor. Enjoy a lobster roll right off a lobster boat or other fresh seafood options. We cycle back to Winter Harbor and catch the ferry back to Bar Harbor.

  • Today’s Activity: cycle 30 miles | elevation gain 1,559 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Lodging: The Harborside Hotel

Day 3 Kayaking Blue Hill Bay

Today is the day to explore the area from a kayak.  You will travel about thirty minutes to the quiet side of Mount Desert Island to explore and paddle Blue Hill Bay.  Your professional guides will assess the tide and winds and create a one-way paddle to maximize time on the water.  Far from the crowds of Bar Harbor, the area offers many opportunities for wildlife viewing, including seals, dolphins, and bald eagles.  In the afternoon, explore Bar Harbor or join your leaders for an easy hike.

Day 4 Acadia’s Carriage Roads

We cruise out the front door of our lodging into the park to begin our adventure for the day. The Carriage Roads offer superb car-free cycling through the interior of Acadia National Park. Arched stone bridges and crushed stone trails make up the roads, built and gifted in the 1900s by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. and family. The historic road system offers 45 miles of quiet, motor-free access for horses, pedestrians and bikes. We pedal through old-growth forests, over stone bridges, past numerous ponds and Eagle Lake.

  • Today’s Activity: cycle 12-30 miles on crushed stone roads| elevation gain 1000-1800 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Lodging: The Harborside Hotel

Day 5 Hiking Cadillac Mountain

Today you hike the iconic Cadillac Mountain the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard and the the first place to see sun in the United States for much of the year. You will climb to the summit via the North Ridge Trail which offers sweeping views of Frenchman Bay. The van will meet you at the summit for a shuttle back to town.

What's Included

Marsha Walton

Our Summer Feet cycle along the Maine coast was glorious. In early September, we had perfect weather. We cycled along breathtaking views. Then we caught our breath in quaint Maine towns and fishing villages. Each evening our luggage was waiting for us at a charming inn, where we were served breakfast before heading out the next morning. The Summer Feet staff were friendly and efficient. We will hope to plan another Summer Feet trip soon! Pedal The Coast
