Acadia Multi-Sport Tour

Day 1 First Steps into Acadia

Your week begins in Portland, Maine, where you meet your fellow travelers in the morning and travel together to Bar Harbor. The transition sets the tone — city to coast, schedules to scenery.

After introductions and a relaxed picnic lunch, you step straight into Acadia National Park on foot. The Acadia Mountain Trail climbs steadily through forest and across broad granite ledges, asking just enough effort from you that you’ll feel satisfied.  At the summit, sweeping views open across the ocean, surrounding islands, and neighboring mountains — a powerful first introduction to the park.

The day concludes with dinner in lively Bar Harbor.  By the end of the night you may feel tired (in the good way) and ready for the days ahead.

  • Today’s Activity: hike 2.5 miles | elevation gain 500 ft
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  • Lodging: The Harborside Hotel

Day 2 Cycling the Wild Side of Acadia

The day begins with a scenic ferry ride across Frenchman Bay to the Schoodic Peninsula, the only portion of Acadia National Park located on the mainland. Along the way, enjoy views of Egg Rock Light and keep an eye out for seals surfacing nearby.

After landing in Winter Harbor, you begin cycling through a quieter, more rugged side of the park. The route climbs toward Schoodic Head, where dramatic views of pounding surf and Cadillac Mountain await. From there, you continue along coastal roads toward the small fishing village of Corea.

Lunch is enjoyed overlooking the harbor — lobster rolls straight from a working lobster boat or other fresh seafood options. After lunch, you complete the ride back to Winter Harbor and return to Bar Harbor by ferry.

  • Today’s Activity: cycle 30 miles | elevation gain 1,559 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Lodging: The Harborside Hotel

Day 3 Kayaking Acadia’s Quiet Coast

Today offers a change of pace as you explore the area from the water. You travel to the quieter side of Mount Desert Island and launch kayaks into Blue Hill Bay.

Professional guides assess tides and wind conditions to create a one-way paddle that maximizes time on the water. Far from the crowds of Bar Harbor, this area provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including Harbor Seals, Bald Eagles, and occasionally Harbor Porpoise.

In the afternoon, return to Bar Harbor to explore on your own or join your leaders for an easy optional hike.

Day 4 Car-Free Cycling on Acadia’s Carriage Roads

You bike directly from your lodging into Acadia National Park to begin the day. Acadia’s historic Carriage Roads provide miles of car-free cycling through the park’s interior. Built and gifted in the early 1900s by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and family, these crushed-stone roads wind through forest, cross elegant stone bridges, and pass numerous ponds and lakes, including Eagle Lake.

Route options allow you to choose the distance that best suits your energy level, making for a day that is both flexible and scenic.

  • Today’s Activity: cycle 12-30 miles on crushed stone roads| elevation gain 1000-1800 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
  • Lodging: The Harborside Hotel

Day 5 Hiking Cadillac Mountain

The final day features a classic Acadia experience: hiking Cadillac Mountain.  Climb to the highest point on the eastern seaboard and the first place in the United States to see sunlight for much of the year.

You ascend via the North Ridge Trail, a steady climb that rewards effort with expansive views of Frenchman Bay. At the summit, the landscapes explored throughout the week are spread out below you in every direction you look.

A shuttle meets you at the top and returns you to town before the afternoon transfer south to Portland.

  • Today’s Activity: hiking 1.5 miles | elevation gain 1000 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
  • Transfer: approximately 3.5 hours

Our Summer Feet cycle along the Maine coast was glorious. In early September, we had perfect weather. We cycled along breathtaking views. Then we caught our breath in quaint Maine towns and fishing villages. Each evening our luggage was waiting for us at a charming inn, where we were served breakfast before heading out the next morning. The Summer Feet staff were friendly and efficient. We will hope to plan another Summer Feet trip soon! Pedal The Coast

Watch the shallows of the shoreline or the mudflats for long-legged waders like Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, and Snowy Egrets. You’re also likely to see Double-crested Cormorants or Common Loons diving.
