Itinerary

DAY 1 Great Head

Guides will meet you at the Ocean Gateway Visitors Center on the Portland waterfront for the start of the tour.  Today’s hike is Great Head, once home to the mansions of the super wealthy, the area burned during the fire of 1947. After the fire, the owners donated the land to the park and rebuilt their homes in Seal Cove. Because of the fire, the area is dominated by birch trees, not pines, which cover most of the park.

DAY 2 The Rugged Beauty of the Schoodic Peninsula

Today you enjoy a unique ferry ride across Frenchman Bay to Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula. You will experience the dramatic power of the open ocean as it crashes along the Schoodic’s rugged shore. Today’s hike is Buck Cove Mountain; the trail will pass through forests and some high bush blueberry fields before climbing to the summit of Schoodic Head.  From here, it is easy to see why the early explorers named the area Mount Desert.

  • Hiking: 3.1 miles | elevation gain 544 ft
  • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch & Dinner
  • The Harborside Hotel

DAY 3 Acadia’s Carriage Roads and Jordan Pond

Today, you will experience Acadia’s Carriage Roads. Conceived, financed, and built by John D. Rockefeller to help people enjoy the interior of the park, the Carriage Roads are one the highlights of Acadia. Your walk along the Carriage Roads leads you to Jordan Pond House, a great stop for a snack. The loop around Jordan Pond offers great views of The Bubbles, which the ambitious are welcome to hike.

DAY 4 Cadillac Mountain

The tallest mountain on the eastern seaboard between Maine and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Cadillac is also the first place in the United States to see the sunrise. The reward for your efforts is the stunning views of the Schoodic Peninsula, Frenchman Bay, and Egg Rock Lighthouse. If you are having fun, you can continue hiking to one of the adjacent mountains or spend the afternoon relaxing in Bar Harbor. Tonight, a lobster feast is on tap.

DAY 5 Hiking in the Camden Hills and Return to Portland

We leave Bar Harbor in the morning on the way to Portland. We pause outside Camden for a hike in the Camden Hills State Park. After hiking, we enjoy lunch in a park overlooking Camden Harbor before continuing on to Portland.

  • Hiking: 1.6 miles
  • Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Views were amazing. Guides were friendly and personable. Lobster roll was delicious. I upgraded to the ebike (first time riding one) and 10/10 recommend it. I wasn’t looking for a workout. Just wanted to see the sights and enjoy myself. Portland was my favorite stop from a New England cruise.

Michael Brown

Five Stars to Rick (our guide) and the folks at Summer Feet Cycling. The ride was perfectly tailored to our group of nine middle aged individuals. The sights were terrific and the lobster role for lunch was the best I have ever eaten. Thanks for making our time in Maine a memorable experience.

Our Summer Feet cycle along the Maine coast was glorious. In early September, we had perfect weather. We cycled along breathtaking views. Then we caught our breath in quaint Maine towns and fishing villages. Each evening our luggage was waiting for us at a charming inn, where we were served breakfast before heading out the next morning. The Summer Feet staff were friendly and efficient. We will hope to plan another Summer Feet trip soon! Pedal The Coast
